Think about some of the leading businesses you see ranking in local search results, even in some of the more competitive industries. Breadcrumb navigation is wonderful for usability and for SEO. This text-based navigation shows where in the site hierarchy the currently viewed web page is located and your location within the site, while providing shortcuts to instantly jump higher up the site hierarchy. A product page for a table lamp may have the breadcrumb navigation of “Home > Home Furnishings > Lighting > Table Lamps.”

If the breadcrumb contains text links with relevant keywords in the anchor text, that is a significant SEO benefit. and better than “click here” or “more info” in the anchor text. If you are in a field that can’t build links naturally create linkbait. What really is link bait? It’s something on your web site that causes someone to link to you. A classic example of link bait would be the Subservient Chicken web site by Burger King. I see a lot of websites that haven’t been optimized for the search engines. Over the years, I continue to see the same problems with what I call “non-optimized websites.” Typically, the biggest issues tend to be basic website design elements that are not included when a website is developed, not bad web design. Most search engine optimization problems can be fixed by making sure nothing is overlooked when building a web page.

Problems arise when search engine spiders try to crawl websites and figure out what a web page is “about”. Search engine spiders aren’t humans, so they cannot read and interpret what a web page is “about” without help from the person who created that web page.

Are you using search engine optimization tactics that lead to SEO overkill?
