Identified the opportunity, developed the partners, negotiated the business terms and managed the major business, technology and infrastructure partners such as Telus Mobility and Lucent Technologies. Managed, mentored and coached a high performance team to develop services that improved the competitive positioning for both Sympatico-Lycos and Telus Mobility by developing Canada’s first LBS enabled Mobile Search:

Sympatico-Lycos Inc.,specializing in providing internet, wireless services and mobile content announced that it will partner with TELUS and Lucent Technologies in Canada’s first-ever live network launch of mobile internet services tailored to the clients’ actual location on the TELUS network.

Sympatico-Lycos will integrate it’s Mobile Content Platform with the industry’s first Mobile Internet Gateway, a system pioneered by Lucent’s Bell Labs to enable wireless network operators to introduce personalized wireless data services.

Lucent’s Mobile Internet Gateway is a system designed for wireless service providers such as TELUS to enable authorized Internet applications to tap into subscriber and wireless network statistical information, specifically for customization of the service.  Industry standard techniques are used to authenticate application access to the requested information.

Lucent’s Mobile Internet Gateway serves three primary purposes:

  • it indicates whether the user’s mobile device is on or off
  • it provides standard internet applications information on the user’s location in real-time, so that content being delivered can be customized to the user’s neighborhood
  • it provides a firewall to secure user data within the wireless network.

This new service is intended to provide real-time, location-based traffic information will integrate content and services initially from Sympatico-Lycosincluding LBS spatial mapping; location based mobile search and geolocated content for enablement of :

  • YellowPages.ca mobile search – wireless geolocation of the more than 2.2 million business listings in the electronic Yellow Pages directory.
  • MobileQ, which has developed an interactive application that allows consumers to easily locate convenient automatic banking machines via their Web-enabled wireless phones.
  • TrafficStation, which provides real-time information on road traffic conditions, enabling drivers to receive a warning before an upcoming highway interchange informing them of, for instance, a traffic jam they might want to avoid with an alternate route.

“This service represents a key milestone in wireless communications,” said Carol Stephenson, president and CEO of Lucent Technologies Canada. “Customers can already use their wireless phones to surf the Net, shop and buy and sell stocks. But Lucent’s Mobile Internet Gateway will enable individualized services that add the additional dimensions of presence and location – truly seizing the convenience mobile Internet offers in comparison to fixed Internet access.”

”The mobile location-based services TELUS is implementing with Lucent and Sympatico-Lycos underline our dedication to pioneering real product and service innovations for the Canadian wireless Internet market.  They include such things as the industry’s first prepaid wireless Internet service and its only flat-rate wireless Internet pricing program,” said George Cope, president and CEO of the new TELUS Mobility, the combination of TELUS and the wireless operations of Clearnet Corporation.  “Lucent’s industry-leading technology will enable us to enable services that take us to a whole new level – personalized, location-specific services for our TELUS PCS clients.”
